DIY Sea Salt Spray For Sexy, Beachy Hair

by | DIY Recipes, Essential Oils

I originally started making my own sea salt spray after I went to the store to buy a ready-made sea salt spray and found out it costs $30!

$30 for something that has 10 ingredients in it, half of which I can’t pronounce?

No thanks – especially when the ocean is 5 minutes from my doorstep.

So, I came home and started researching what essential oils were good for the hair. I knew that I could make my own sea salt spray with a few essential oils, coconut oil, water, and salt.

Plus, I had the perfect subject to test it on – If it passed the test of my surfer boy (Dan), then it was a winner.

Watch the video below to see the recipe in action!

DIY Sea Salt Spray Recipe Ingredients

  • 8oz spray bottle
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp of Sea Salt (you can add less depending on how crispy you want your hair)
  • A squeeze of fresh lemon
  • 2 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 2 drops of Rosemary essential oil
  • 2 drops of Lemon essential oil

Directions

  1. Heat the water to almost boiling
  2. Add the coconut oil to the water and stir until it is dissolved – I just learned from my friend over at miaerba.com (who is a skincare guru) that you don’t want water to get in your coconut oil jar because it can become a breeding ground for bacteria if it just sits there. So add your coconut oil to the hot water with a clean spoon first and stir. THEN go to step 3.
  3. Add the salt to the water and stir
  4. Add the lemon juice to the mixture (Note – you can substitute fresh lemon with 2 drops of lemon essential oil)
  5. Fill your 8oz bottle with the salt mixture
  6. Top with 2 drops of each essential oil
  7. Shake well
  8. Use immediately after showering for that ‘just left the beach’ look :)

Note: Lemon is photosensitive and may lighten your hair if exposed to the sun. You can omit this ingredient entirely if you want.

I chose Rosemary and Lavender essential oil because they’re nourishing and encourage hair growth. Plus they smell divine together!

I use this every day in my hair for that sexy beach look. And if you’re a guy, you can use this spray instead of pomade for a slightly textured look.

PS – it passed the test of my surfer boy. He uses it every day too :)

Thanks Anna! And the great thing is that you can decide how ‘crispy’ you want your hair by regulating how much salt you add. I love it!
