What Is Meditation (My Approach To Why It’s Beneficial)

by | Spirituality

Have you ever wondered what happens to your brain when you meditate?

Today’s video has my ‘unscientific’ interpretation, but I think it beautifully sums up what’s going on up there.

Plus I’ll give you a simple trick to help get you in the habit meditating :)

If you ever think you don’t have time to meditate, then I urge you to watch this video.

We’re all dealing with the same 24 hours, 7 days a week and excuses are the only thing keeping us from doing it. Besides, meditating may actually help you manage your time better :)

Hey everyone, its Lindsey Victoria here from A Life Well-Balanced and you are watching Life with LV.

So today I have a quick video because I learned something, a nice example, to explain what is meditation and why it is so good. If you’ve been following my channel, you probably know that I talk a lot about mindfulness, meditation, journaling, just anything that you can do to try to live a more balanced life.

What Is Meditation

So the example here.

I want you to look at this glass of water. In this water, I have some dirt. What I’m going to do is stir the dirt up. Do you see all that swirling around, all that sand and dirt? That is our thoughts, all of our negative thoughts, negative self-talk, beliefs, chatter – all that swirling around. How can we think clearly when our brains are clouded with swirling thoughts? But as you notice, as the dirt starts to sink, you can see clearly through the water.

That is what happens when you meditate. Your thoughts become clear, the negative thoughts, the doubts, the negative self-beliefs, thoughts that just come in and out, they start to sink to the bottom and clarity comes forth.

So I really wanted to share that because I thought that was a really great way to show unscientifically (there’s a lot of scientific studies out there), why meditation is so good and why even the most successful people say that just five minutes of meditation a day will really help you.

I can’t take complete credit for this because I actually learned this from my coach Jennifer Grace. She wrote a book, “Directing Your Destiny” and she talks about this example in her book. But I wanted to bring that forward because I think just 5 minutes a day is really all you need.

Tips To Get You In The Habit Of Meditating

So I want to give you a couple tips because I know a lot of times people are like, “I don’t have time”, “I don’t know what to do”, “Sitting cross-legged hurts”, all of those things.

But I want to move all that stuff aside and I’ll just tell you what I do. I don’t get out of bed every morning and sit cross-legged and sit there like this. I wish I could do it, but I’m not quite there yet. What I do is I actually stay laying in my comfy bed in a way that I know that I can let my thoughts settle. I use an app called Insight Timer and I search for a guided meditation, just 5 or 10 minutes. I use keywords depending on what it is that I want to work on. So if I’m trying to overcome a certain fear or if I’m working on something I’m angry about or anxiety, or productivity, I just put those right in Insight Timer and I lay and listen and let myself go deeper. Any time a thought comes in, I recognize that thought but I just set it aside.

I think that the whole purpose of meditation is not necessarily that we become completely silent. I wish that was the case but that’s probably not the case for the majority of the world.

The idea is to see those thoughts and understand that they don’t have to make up your life and your beliefs and your story. We just want to be able to get those thoughts to sink to the bottom so we can see clearly and so we can move forward with whatever it is that we’re working on.

So that was just a quick little video. I thought that was a great example of what is meditation, why it is so good, and why people are so such a proponent of it.

If you liked this video please share it with somebody or leave a comment.

Let me know what you guys do for meditating. And if you guys use a particular app or your style of meditating, of course, I’d love to know.

All right guys, thank you so much for watching. I hope this helped and I’ll see you next time.
